The following ad for the Buick Regal Gran Sport coupe ran in the April 1989 edition of Motor Trend magazine. It featured a large overhead shot of the car's interior, touting the '89 GS' available four bucket seat configuration as a "Buick for two. Plus two." The copy went on to say that the "Regal Gran Sport is the most exhilarating Buick this side of the racetrack." The Regal was based on General Motors' brand-new-at-the-time W-body platform, which shared its underpinnings with the 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and 1990 Chevy Lumina.

The rear wheel drive (RWD) concept was powered by a front-mounted dual-overhead cam, 4-liter V8 that produced 250 horsepower mated to a four speed automatic transmission.

The paint scheme is an evolutionary, but fresh update with familiar blues and grays and new menacing black "88" numbers affixed to either side of the car. Chevy engineers employed an array of tools, including computational fluid dynamics analysis and reduced-scale and full-scale wind-tunnel testing, to optimize aerodynamics.
